How to Keep Outdoor Toys Clean

While the summer sun is fading, there is still plenty of outdoor playtime left for the year. Before your kids head outdoors for a fall filled with playing in leaves, exploring new worlds in a treehouse or closing down the kiddie pool, here is what you need to know about keeping outdoor toys clean.

Use Vinegar and Baking Soda

Vinegar is one of the best multi-purpose tools for cleaning inside and outside of your home. Make a vinegar solution by combining 2 cups of white vinegar and 2 gallons of warm water. If you need a little extra power, you can also add some lemon juice. Use a sponge or bristled brush to scrub the cleaning solution onto the toys and then rinse them off with a hose.

Baking soda is another wonderful cleaning aid, as it can remove grime and also get rid of odor at the same time. Create a paste from baking soda and water. Scrub the mixture onto the surface of the dirty toy and let it sit for a little while. Then, use a clean cloth to wipe off the paste and rinse the toy down with a hose. This is a great way to clean random toy parts, like bike tires or sturdy toys that need extra cleaning power.

Bring in the Big Guns

Magic erasers are awesome for getting suspicious stains and hard-to-remove scuffs off of surfaces. They are also wonderful for cutting through layers of dirt, grease, grime and debris. Purchase extra-large magic erasers and wash down small toys, swing sets and anything else that needs a little extra elbow grease to clean.

If you have a hose with a spray attachment, use the highest setting to spray down some toys. This attachment boasts a high level of power and can even be used in combination with your kiddie pool to make a bath for dirty outdoor toys.

Cover Things Up

Finally, the best way to keep outdoor toys clean is by covering them up and storing them when not in use. Use a tarp to stop toys from being blown away or drenched. In the late fall, bring toys inside or place them in a shed, garage or basement until the weather warms up again. Winter weather can be harsh on play equipment, so a little effort will keep favorite outdoor toys around for even longer.
